Choosing your first build in a big RPG: the three-question method

Before touching your first stat point, answer three questions. A simple method that avoids builds that collapse midway through a 100-hour game.

Choosing your first build in a big RPG: the three-question method

The most expensive mistake in a 100-hour RPG happens in the first five minutes: picking a build you do not understand. Not because the build is weak, but because the player cannot explain why they chose it. The three-question method below takes ten minutes and saves dozens of hours.

Question one: what do you do when combat gets hard? The honest answer is usually not 'switch weapons' but 'grit through it'. A first build should forgive mistakes: melee with a shield, or self-healing magic. Save experimental builds for a second playthrough.

Question two: how much do you want to learn? The deepest system in the world is useless if it sits in a menu untouched. Genre newcomers should pick one system — weapons OR spells, not both — and master it to the credits.

Question three: does this build exist without rare loot? Many builds depend on gear that appears forty hours in. Check whether the core works with starting equipment. If not, the early game will feel like waiting for the real game to begin.

After all three answers, write the build in one sentence: 'I play as X who solves problems with Y.' If that sentence needs commas, the build is too complicated for a first run.

One final warning: do not rebuild mid-game because of an online video. Big RPGs are designed so that almost every style reaches the credits. What defines the experience is not stat numbers but whether you understand what every button does.
